My mother-in-law, a true culinary wizard, has always made the most incredible hams, and her festive spreads were certainly a major influence. While I’ve always appreciated a good deli ham sandwich – especially with the unconventional but highly recommended addition of potato chips for that delightful crunch – holiday hams felt like a different league. This recipe brings that elevated flavor experience right into your kitchen, making it approachable for everyone.

Nostalgia often plays a significant role in our food traditions. I remember my dad stopping by Savoia Bakery every Sunday after church for a warm loaf of French bread, perfect for crafting cold-cut sandwiches that became our standard Sunday lunch. While those memories are cherished, the anticipation of a glazed ham for special occasions creates its own set of heartwarming moments and delicious traditions.

As Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas approach, a beautifully prepared ham stands out as a traditional and beloved centerpiece for countless family dinners. While it might seem daunting, especially for those new to holiday cooking, glazing a spiral ham is surprisingly straightforward. With minimal effort and a few pantry staples, you can transform a simple pre-cooked ham into an extraordinarily flavorful dish that will garner rave reviews from all your guests – and leave you feeling like a culinary superstar!

Why Choose a Spiral Ham for Your Holiday Feast?

One of the greatest advantages of a spiral-cut ham is that it comes fully cooked. This key detail significantly reduces your cooking time and minimizes the risk of overcooking or undercooking. Your primary goal is to gently warm the ham through and infuse it with an incredible sweet and savory glaze. The pre-sliced nature of a spiral ham also makes serving a breeze – it carves effortlessly, ensuring perfectly portioned slices every time. This ease of preparation makes it an ideal choice for busy holiday hosts who want a stunning main course without all the stress.

Crafting the Perfect Ham Glaze: Sweet and Savory Harmony

The glaze is truly what elevates a good ham to an unforgettable one. This recipe features a classic combination of ingredients that creates a perfectly balanced sticky, sweet, and slightly tangy coating. Each component plays a vital role:

  • Brown Sugar: Provides deep caramel notes and helps create that beautiful, glistening crust. Packed brown sugar ensures proper measurement and texture.
  • Honey: Adds a rich sweetness and contributes to the glaze’s desirable stickiness, ensuring it adheres beautifully to the ham.
  • Orange Juice: Offers a bright, citrusy tang that cuts through the sweetness and complements the savory pork. It also adds moisture, helping to keep the ham succulent.
  • Ground Cinnamon and Cloves: These warm spices are quintessential holiday flavors, imparting an aromatic depth that pairs wonderfully with ham.

You can also experiment with other additions to customize your glaze, such as a touch of Dijon mustard for a bit of sharpness, pineapple juice for a tropical twist, or even a splash of bourbon for a sophisticated kick. The key is to simmer the ingredients until the sugar dissolves and the glaze thickens slightly, creating a consistency that will beautifully coat every crevice of your spiral ham.

Selecting the Best Spiral Ham

When purchasing your ham, look for a good quality, bone-in, fully cooked spiral-cut ham. Bone-in hams often offer more flavor and tend to stay juicier. The weight will depend on how many people you’re serving; a good rule of thumb is about 1/2 to 3/4 pound per person for bone-in ham. If you anticipate wanting plenty of leftovers (which we highly recommend!), consider buying a slightly larger ham. Always check the packaging for any pre-packaged glazes, which you can discard in favor of our homemade version for superior flavor.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Glazed Ham

  • Room Temperature is Key: Removing the ham from the refrigerator at least two hours before cooking allows it to come to room temperature. This promotes more even heating and helps prevent the ham from drying out.
  • Wrap Tightly with Foil: For the initial baking phase, wrapping the ham tightly in foil helps to trap moisture, ensuring the ham stays incredibly juicy as it heats through.
  • Baste Generously: Don’t be shy with the glaze! When applying the second coat, make sure to get the glaze in between the spiral slices. This ensures every bite is infused with that wonderful sweet and savory flavor.
  • Monitor Internal Temperature: Although the ham is pre-cooked, using a meat thermometer to ensure it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) is crucial for proper warming and food safety.
  • Resting Period: Just like any good roast, letting the ham rest for 15-20 minutes after it comes out of the oven allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat. This results in a more tender and succulent ham. Loosely tenting it with foil during this time helps retain warmth.
  • If Glaze Hardens: If your glaze cools and hardens during the cooking process, simply return it to low heat on the stovetop for a minute or two to loosen it back up, making it easy to brush onto the ham.

Beyond the Holidays: Enjoying Ham Year-Round

While glazed spiral ham shines brightest during holiday gatherings, its versatility extends far beyond festive seasons. It makes a fantastic main course for any regular family dinner, a delicious pork roast for a Sunday meal, or simply to ensure you have plenty of ham on hand for sandwiches, omelets, and other quick meals throughout the week. If you’re looking for an even more hands-off approach, consider preparing your ham in a slow cooker for tender, flavorful results. There’s no reason not to enjoy this delicious cut of pork more often!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe I’m about to enter a delightful ham food coma. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!

Serves: 8-10

Ingredients

  • 8-10 pound spiral ham
  • For the Glaze:
  • 1 cup light or dark brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup honey
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

  1. Remove ham from refrigerator at least 2 hours before cooking to bring it to room temperature.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together all of the ingredients for the glaze.
  3. Bring the glaze mixture to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 1-2 minutes or until the sugar dissolves and the glaze thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
  4. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C).
  5. Unwrap ham and place it in a large roasting pan, cut side down.
  6. Brush approximately half of the prepared glaze evenly over the ham.
  7. Wrap the roasting pan tightly with aluminum foil, ensuring a good seal to lock in moisture.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes per pound or until the ham reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees F (63 degrees C) when measured with a meat thermometer.
  9. Carefully remove the ham from the oven and discard the foil.
  10. Brush the remaining glaze over the ham, being sure to work it in between the spiral slices for maximum flavor penetration. (See notes below if glaze has hardened).
  11. Return the ham to the oven, uncovered, and continue cooking for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the glaze is beautifully caramelized and sticky.
  12. Remove from oven, loosely tent with foil, and let rest for 15 minutes before carving and serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring a tender and succulent ham.

Notes:

  1. If the glaze hardens while cooling, simply return it to low heat on the stovetop for a moment to loosen it back up for easy brushing.
