Super Bowl Taco Party Planning Guide: Menu, Drinks & Games

Do you know how many people tune in to the Super Bowl each year? In 2015 the game reached about 114.4 million viewers, and some years — for any number of reasons — viewership can be even higher. With crowds that size, you’ll want food that’s easy to serve, customizable, and satisfying for a range of appetites. A taco bar fits the bill perfectly: it’s flexible, allows guests to assemble their own plates, and leaves you with leftovers to enjoy later.

We host a Super Bowl viewing party annually. Our guest count changes from year to year, so I design a menu that accommodates different appetites, last-minute additions, and the possibility of leftovers. This year I’m running a taco bar. Once the components are arranged, guests help themselves; I only need to top up items and rewarm fillings as needed.

Below are practical guidelines for planning your own taco party. If you like, you can add a nacho bar or other game-day sides, and include a few extra recipes for variety.

How to Throw A Super Bowl Taco Party: A great way to entertain. People can help themselves as they feel the call, and customize their own tacos as they wish.

The Taco Shells and Tortillas

Offer both hard and soft shells so guests can mix and match. Soft tortillas can be corn, flour, or a combination. For more flavor, warm tortillas briefly in a dry skillet—30 to 60 seconds per side—until they show a few browned spots. Hard shells crisp up nicely after about 7 minutes in a 350°F oven.

Shells and tortillas don’t have to be piping hot when served, but warming them brings out flavor. If possible, heat hard shells shortly before guests arrive, place them in a bowl, and cover with a clean dish towel. You can microwave soft tortillas just before serving or keep them warm in a low oven or wrapped in foil.

The Taco Fillings

Plan on at least two different fillings to make the taco bar feel special. A simple and reliable approach is one ground meat (beef or turkey) and one shredded option (pulled chicken or pork). Include a hearty vegetarian option such as seasoned black or pinto beans and a pot of rice—both work as taco fillings or as sides for guests who prefer a meatless plate.

Prepare fillings ahead and reheat before serving. Use a warming dish, reheat periodically in the microwave, or keep backup pans to swap in so the line never runs out. This keeps everything hot and ready without last-minute scrambling.

The Taco Toppings

This is the fun part. Start with the classics: salsa, persillade or pico de gallo, shredded lettuce, avocado or guacamole, cilantro, diced onions, sour cream, and a selection of cheeses—shredded cheddar, Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, or crumbled queso are all welcome.

Then expand the options: sliced fresh or pickled jalapeños, sliced olives, slivered radishes, extra salsas, scallions, shredded kale, sautéed mushrooms, thinly sliced cabbage, sautéed onions and peppers, fried shallots, and fermented pickles. These variety items let guests personalize each taco to their taste.

For an elevated twist, try folding chopped cooked bacon into guacamole for a smoky note, or stir charred jalapeño puree and lime into sour cream for a spicy crema. Let kids and adults experiment—toppings are an easy place to be creative.

How to Set up the Taco Bar

Arrange the line logically from left to right: plates first, then shells and tortillas, followed by fillings, and finally the toppings. Finish the line with sides like rice or salad. Place napkins and utensils near the end so guests can grab them as they head to their seats.

Label containers if you have any common allergens or spicy items, and provide small serving utensils for each dish to keep the flow smooth and hygienic.

Game Day Seating

Count your guests ahead of time and ensure there’s a place for everyone to sit. Use dining chairs, folding chairs, a card table, or scattered floor cushions to maximize seating. Coffee tables can become activity centers covered with snacks and interactive foods for casual eating.

If you expect many kids or a large crowd, consider flexible seating options like poufs and extra pillows; this keeps the viewing area comfortable and social.

Drinks

Beer is a common choice for Super Bowl gatherings, so stock a range of crowd-pleasing brews and invite guests to bring favorites. Also provide plenty of nonalcoholic beverages: flavored seltzers, sodas, hot cocoa or mulled cider for colder weather, and ample water. A themed pitcher mocktail can be a festive, family-friendly touch.

Pre-Thinking About Clean Up

Disposable serveware is convenient, and if you choose it, prefer recyclable paper, bamboo, or other biodegradable options. Use sturdy plates—tacos can be heavy and messy—and provide visible trash and recycling receptacles.

Stock plenty of napkins and consider placing wet wipes or paper towels near the food line. If small children are present or you expect spills, roll up rugs or move them out of high-traffic zones to protect carpet from stains.

With a little planning—varied shells, at least two fillings, lots of toppings, a clear buffet flow, comfortable seating, and thoughtful drink and cleanup arrangements—you’ll have a simple, crowd-pleasing Super Bowl taco party that keeps guests happy and the host relaxed.
