The Ultimate Leftover Turkey-Cranberry Monte Cristo Sandwich: A Post-Thanksgiving Delight

Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude, and, let’s be honest, an abundance of delicious food. While the main feast is undoubtedly the highlight, the days that follow often present a delightful challenge: what to do with all those wonderful leftovers? If you’re anything like me, you cherish the warmth of home after holiday travels, and there’s truly no place like it to unwind and enjoy simple pleasures. This year, transform your post-holiday routine with a recipe that elevates your turkey and cranberry sauce from mere leftovers into an extraordinary culinary experience: the Leftover Turkey-Cranberry Monte Cristo Sandwich.

Reimagining Holiday Leftovers: A Culinary Adventure

Every year, the question arises: how can we make Thanksgiving leftovers exciting again? While a simple turkey sandwich is always a classic, sometimes you crave something more adventurous, something that truly transforms the familiar into the fantastic. This isn’t just another turkey sandwich; it’s a gourmet experience designed to impress your taste buds and delight any houseguests still lingering after the holiday festivities. The beauty of this Monte Cristo lies in its unique blend of sweet and savory, a hallmark of French-inspired cuisine that’s surprisingly easy to achieve right in your own kitchen.

Last year, in preparation for the holiday season, I experimented with various turkey recipes. My goal was to craft dishes that would not only taste incredible but also provide fresh ideas for using up that post-Thanksgiving bounty. Instead of roasting an entire turkey, which can be quite a commitment, I opted for a more practical approach: preparing a succulent turkey breast in the slow cooker. This method yielded incredibly juicy, fall-off-the-bone meat, perfect for shredding or slicing. While I might have briefly missed the dark meat, the ease and convenience of this method, coupled with the delicious results, made it an absolute winner. Plus, it meant we didn’t get “turkeyed out” before the main event even arrived!

The Magic of the Monte Cristo Sandwich

The Monte Cristo sandwich is a beloved classic, often found on diner menus, celebrated for its delightful combination of savory meats and cheeses, all encased in an egg-dipped, pan-fried bread, typically dusted with a touch of confectioners’ sugar. It’s essentially a fancy grilled cheese and ham sandwich taken to the next level, often compared to French toast due to its preparation style. This recipe takes that classic concept and infuses it with the comforting flavors of Thanksgiving, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

One of the standout creations from my recipe experiments was this Leftover Turkey-Cranberry Monte Cristo Sandwich. The harmonious blend of savory turkey and tangy cranberry sauce, complemented by gooey melted cheese, was simply divine. I first discovered this brilliant idea from my friend Cathy of Noble Pig (though I hadn’t even met her yet when I initially saw her recipe on Pinterest!). As a self-proclaimed Monte Cristo aficionado – despite my endearing tendency to mispronounce it as “Monte Crisco” when ordering – I knew I had to try her ingenious twist. It’s always a joy to repurpose leftovers, but switching things up is key to keeping meals exciting, and this recipe delivers on that promise perfectly. I finally had the pleasure of meeting Cathy later that year at the Pass the Pork tour, and while I forgot to tell her how much I adored this recipe of hers in person, now the secret is out!

This sandwich isn’t just good; it’s transcendent. Prepare yourself for a flavor journey that will transport you straight to food heaven. It’s not only the best way to utilize those precious holiday leftovers, but it’s also guaranteed to be a massive hit with anyone lucky enough to taste it. Imagine crisp, golden-brown bread, a warm, tender filling of turkey and cheese, and that irresistible burst of cranberry, all finished with a dusting of sweet powdered sugar. It’s a symphony of textures and tastes, making it an ideal choice for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or even a light dinner. Trust me, your houseguests will be raving about these sandwiches long after the last crumb is gone.

Crafting Your Perfect Monte Cristo: Tips for Success

Achieving the perfect Monte Cristo sandwich is easier than you might think, and a few simple tips can elevate your creation from good to absolutely spectacular. The key is in the details, from your choice of bread to the way you cook each side to golden perfection.

Choosing Your Bread: A very soft French bread is recommended, but other soft, substantial breads like challah, brioche, or even Texas toast can work wonderfully. The softness allows for easy soaking in the egg mixture without becoming too dense or soggy, ensuring a tender interior and crisp exterior.

The Right Cheese: Muenster cheese melts beautifully and offers a mild, creamy flavor that complements both turkey and cranberry. However, feel free to experiment with your favorite melting cheese. Swiss, provolone, or even a mild white cheddar could be fantastic alternatives, adding their own unique character to the sandwich.

Cranberry Sauce Matters: Whether you use homemade cranberry sauce or a store-bought variety, ensure it’s not too watery. A slightly thicker consistency will stay put within the sandwich. Don’t be shy with the cranberry layer; its tartness is crucial for balancing the richness of the turkey and cheese.

Perfect Soaking Technique: The goal is to soak the bread just enough to get a good coating of the egg and milk mixture without making it overly saturated. Aim for 10-20 seconds per side, adjusting based on the thickness and porosity of your bread. Thinner slices require less time. This brief soak creates that signature custardy interior while preventing sogginess.

Achieving Golden Brown Perfection: Medium heat is your best friend when pan-frying. Too high, and the bread will burn before the cheese melts through; too low, and it will absorb too much butter and become greasy. Use enough butter to create a rich, flavorful crust, adding more as needed to keep the pan from getting dry. A beautifully golden-brown crust on both sides indicates perfect doneness.

Serving Suggestions: The dusting of confectioners’ sugar is not just for aesthetics; it adds a delicate sweetness that truly enhances the Monte Cristo experience, playing off the savory and tart elements. Serve these sandwiches immediately while they are warm and the cheese is wonderfully gooey. For an extra flourish, you could offer a small side of extra cranberry sauce or even a dollop of apricot jam for dipping.

This Leftover Turkey-Cranberry Monte Cristo Sandwich is more than just a recipe; it’s an invitation to savor the flavors of the holiday season in a fresh, exciting way. It’s a testament to the idea that leftovers can be just as, if not more, exciting than the original meal. So, gather your post-Thanksgiving bounty, tie on your apron, and prepare to create a culinary masterpiece that will be talked about for weeks to come. Enjoy every delicious bite and happy turkey leftover eating!

  • 1-1/2 cups cranberry sauce
  • 12 oz thinly sliced Muenster cheese or cheese of your choosing
  • thinly sliced leftover turkey
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4-6 Tablespoons butter
  • confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

  1. Spread cranberry sauce on each slice of bread – you can add as much or as little as you like.
  2. Start building your sandwiches by taking a slice of cheese and tearing it in half.
  3. Top the bread with half a cheese slice, turkey and the other half of the cheese slice.
  4. Top with another slice of bread, cranberry sauce side down.
  5. In a shallow pie plate, add the eggs and milk and beat the mixture with a fork until combined.
  6. Briefly soak each sandwich in the mixture, about 10-20 seconds per side depending on the thickness of your bread slices. Less time for thinner bread slices. This way it won’t get too soggy.

  10. Dust lightly with confectioners’ sugar before serving. Serve immediately.
