Your Ultimate Guide to New York City: Where to Eat & What to Do

Welcome to the ultimate guide for exploring the vibrant heart of New York City! As avid travelers, my husband and I believe that truly experiencing a new destination means delving beyond the typical tourist paths. While classic landmarks certainly hold their charm, we always seek out those “well-kept secrets” – the authentic local eateries and cool hangouts that truly capture the city’s spirit. Our trips to NYC, often multiple times a year, have allowed us to uncover a fantastic blend of popular attractions and lesser-known gems. This comprehensive guide shares our favorite places to eat and the most unforgettable activities to enjoy, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned explorer.
Having written extensive guides on Where to Eat in Boston and What to Do in Chicago, it’s about time I compiled our top New York City recommendations. This post is a culmination of years of personal experiences, countless delicious meals, and thrilling adventures. Friends and family frequently ask for our NYC tips, and rather than typing out the same suggestions repeatedly, I’ve gathered all our insights into one convenient resource. From iconic sights to culinary delights, prepare to discover the best of the Big Apple!
Exploring New York City: Iconic Sights and Unique Experiences
New York City offers an endless array of activities, blending historical significance with modern marvels. Here are our top recommendations for things to do, ensuring a memorable visit for every traveler.
Catch a Breathtaking Broadway Show
The magic of Broadway is an essential NYC experience. Stepping into one of its historic theaters and witnessing a world-class production is truly unforgettable. While tickets can be pricey, there’s a fantastic way to enjoy Broadway on a budget: the TKTS booths. Located in various spots across the city, including Times Square, these booths offer same-day or next-day discounted tickets for a wide range of shows.
The process is straightforward: approach the counter, inquire about available shows, and you’ll be presented with seat options and prices. While you can’t always pick the newest blockbusters, you’ll find plenty of acclaimed and classic productions – think “Phantom of the Opera” or “Les Misérables.” The lines can appear long, but they move surprisingly fast, much like a well-oiled machine. Arrive shortly after opening for the best selection, and be ready to make a quick decision. We’ve saved a significant amount on tickets this way, making a Broadway show an accessible highlight of our trips.

Stroll Across the Magnificent Brooklyn Bridge
Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is a quintessential New York experience that offers unparalleled views of both the Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines. It’s an iconic pedestrian journey that blends history, architecture, and breathtaking scenery. On our last visit, staying within walking distance of the bridge, we embraced the opportunity. Despite being 12 weeks pregnant, the beautiful November day made it an absolute joy. This walk is popular with tourists and locals alike, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes – you’ll want to take your time and soak it all in.
Brooklyn Bridge
Once you reach the Brooklyn side, resist the urge to turn back immediately! Descend to Washington Street and immerse yourself in DUMBO (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass), one of Brooklyn’s most charming and photogenic neighborhoods. DUMBO is renowned for its historic cobblestone streets, industrial-chic architecture, and stunning vistas of the Manhattan Bridge perfectly framing the Empire State Building. Spend a few hours exploring the area’s upscale boutiques, art galleries, and waterfront parks. It’s the perfect place to capture incredible photos and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. And, of course, no visit to DUMBO is complete without indulging in some of its world-famous culinary delights – particularly the pizza and bagels!
DUMBO
The architectural beauty and breathtaking skyline views are arguably the most captivating aspects of DUMBO. Wander through the historic district, admiring the repurposed warehouses that now house trendy businesses. And for a truly authentic Brooklyn experience, seek out La Bagel Delight. This unassuming spot serves up what I consider to be the quintessential New York bagel. Forget the frills; here, it’s all about the perfect texture and flavor. My go-to is a simple “everything bagel” with plain cream cheese – a pure, unadulterated taste of Brooklyn goodness that never disappoints.

Marvel at The Oculus: A Modern Architectural Wonder
For a dose of striking contemporary architecture, a visit to The Oculus is highly recommended. This transportation hub and shopping mall, located near the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, is a masterpiece of design. Its pristine white, winged structure is meant to evoke a bird released from a child’s hands, or, as a lesser-known fact suggests, the skeletal remains of a whale. The interior is equally impressive: spacious, minimalist, and flooded with natural light, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. It’s a fantastic spot for capturing unique photographs, offering a stark contrast to the surrounding historical sites.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, The Oculus also houses a Westfield shopping center and several cafes, making it a convenient place to pause, grab a coffee, or explore some retail therapy. However, the primary draw remains its unique architectural splendor, inviting visitors to simply stand and admire its symmetrical beauty and the incredible engineering behind it.

A Culinary Journey Through NYC: From Classic Bites to Unique Delights
New York City is a global food capital, a melting pot of flavors and culinary innovations. Our travels always revolve around discovering incredible food, and NYC certainly delivers. Here’s a curated list of our favorite spots, ranging from casual comforts to upscale dining experiences.
Shake Shack: The Quintessential NYC Burger Experience
Shake Shack holds a special place in our hearts – and stomachs – as serving arguably the best burger in the universe. While their gourmet burgers might be a splurge compared to fast-food chains, they offer an unparalleled taste and quality, providing a fantastic “cheap eats” option in an otherwise expensive city. The consistency of their food is remarkable; you always know you’re in for a treat. Their locations are often prime and bustling, so be prepared for a lively atmosphere and potentially a short wait for a table, especially during peak hours.
Our favorite location is in Madison Square Park. During warmer months, you can often find outdoor seating and enjoy your meal amidst the beautiful scenery of the park. And whatever you do, don’t leave without trying one of their legendary milkshakes – they’re thick, creamy, and the perfect complement to their savory burgers and crinkle-cut fries.

Levain Bakery: Life-Changing Cookies
Prepare for a cookie experience unlike any other at Levain Bakery. Their colossal, impossibly thick chocolate chip cookies are so divine that I’ve even developed copycat recipes to satisfy my cravings between trips. These cookies are truly life-changing: perfectly crisp on the outside, wonderfully soft and gooey in the center, and generously studded with melted chocolate and walnuts. My personal favorite is the classic chocolate chip, while Mr. Wishes is partial to the dark chocolate with peanut butter chips (for which I also have a copycat recipe!).
Levain now boasts multiple locations, often quite close to each other, but no matter how far out of our way we have to go, a visit is non-negotiable on every NYC trip. The aroma alone will draw you in, and the first bite confirms why these cookies have achieved cult status. It’s pure dedication, but completely worth it for a taste of perfection.

Adrienne’s Pizzabar & the Charm of Stone Street
For arguably the best pizza in New York City, head to Adrienne’s Pizzabar, nestled on the historic Stone Street in the Financial District. This area offers a delightful escape from the city’s usual hustle and bustle, providing a more relaxed and European-like atmosphere. Adrienne’s is never overly crowded, making it a perfect spot to unwind and savor an exceptional meal. As someone whose in-laws own a pizzeria, I consider myself a bit of a pizza connoisseur, and Adrienne’s consistently impresses.
Our standing order is always their signature old-fashioned pizza – a thick, flavorful crust with perfectly balanced toppings that make every bite a delight. While I can’t speak for their other Italian dishes, the pizza alone is worth the journey. Stone Street itself is a destination, a charming pedestrian-only lane lined with outdoor dining, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll before or after your meal, soaking in the unique ambiance of this historic district.

Argo Tea: A Refreshing Alternative
When in need of a revitalizing drink, especially on a warm New York day, we often bypass the usual coffee chains for Argo Tea. Our preferred location in the Flatiron District offers ample seating, both indoors and out, perfect for people-watching and soaking in the urban energy. Argo Tea stands out for its diverse selection of high-quality teas, served hot or cold, with innovative flavor combinations. We’ve tried many different varieties, and each has been exceptional. The shorter lines and unique drink options make it a fantastic alternative to the more mainstream coffee shops. I particularly love their hibiscus apple iced tea – a perfectly refreshing treat.

ABC Kitchen: Elevated Farm-to-Table Dining
Also located in the chic Flatiron District, ABC Kitchen offers an outstanding brunch and dining experience. This restaurant masterfully blends casual elegance with a sophisticated farm-to-table philosophy, creating an ambiance that is both welcoming and stylish. The service is consistently superb, and every dish we’ve tried has been a testament to their commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients. They truly excel at crafting unique and innovative dishes that are both comforting and exciting.
If you’re looking for a memorable brunch or dinner spot with friends, ABC Kitchen is an excellent choice. Its popularity means reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak hours, but the exceptional food and inviting atmosphere are well worth the planning.

Black Tap: Iconic Milkshakes and Burgers
Black Tap is a vibrant spot known primarily for its visually spectacular “Crazyshakes” – towering, elaborately decorated milkshakes that are as much works of art as they are desserts, making them perfect for social media. While opinions on their burgers vary (some swear by them, others find them simply good), the overall experience is undeniably fun and energetic. The atmosphere is cool and lively, often resulting in a wait, particularly during busy times, but the unique shakes and vibrant vibe are part of the draw.
This small, bustling restaurant often has a queue outside, with wait times typically ranging from 30 to 60 minutes. However, we found that going later in the evening with a larger party significantly reduced our wait. If you’re seeking an Instagram-worthy treat and a lively dining experience, Black Tap is a must-visit.

Tompkins Square Bagels: Beyond the Ordinary
Yes, another bagel recommendation – but this one is truly special! I first discovered Tompkins Square Bagels on Instagram and was instantly captivated by their inventive cream cheese flavors, especially the birthday cake cream cheese (which appealed to my inner child!). They also offer a tempting cookie dough cream cheese that’s next on my list. Located in the lively East Village, this spot is a local favorite, often boasting a long line that moves remarkably quickly. Once inside, you’ll be greeted by the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bagels.
The bagels themselves are consistently high quality, with a perfect chew and flavor, and their coffee is excellent. There’s seating available in the back if you wish to dine in. Tompkins Square Bagels offers a playful and delicious take on a New York staple, making it a must-try for any bagel enthusiast looking for something a little different.

Crepes du Nord: Sweet and Savory Delights
Tucked away in a quaint, historic building on a winding street in the Financial District, Crepes du Nord offers an absolutely delightful experience for crepe lovers. This charming and casual restaurant specializes in both sweet and savory crepes, each one crafted to perfection. The atmosphere is truly unique – cozy and intimate, with a vibrant energy that makes it a fun place to dine.
Given its small size, be prepared for a potential wait, especially during colder months when everyone seeks refuge indoors. My husband and I often start with savory breakfast or dinner crepes, then share a decadent dessert crepe. Every option on their menu is wonderful, making it a fantastic spot for a light meal, brunch, or a sweet indulgence in a picturesque setting.

Schmackery’s Bakery: Creative Cookie Flavors
Schmackery’s Bakery is a delightful and whimsical spot, particularly popular among theater-goers due to its proximity to Broadway. This bakery specializes in large, generously sized cookies with an imaginative array of flavors, all at a relatively affordable price for specialty treats in NYC. You’ll likely encounter a bustling line, but it moves quickly, so don’t be deterred. Their cookies strike the perfect balance: wonderfully soft and chewy in the center with a slightly crisp exterior.
We often find ourselves buying an assortment of different kinds to sample the variety – it’s part of the fun! While perhaps not reaching the legendary status of Levain Bakery, Schmackery’s cookies are undeniably delicious and offer a unique, enjoyable experience. It’s certainly worth a visit to discover your new favorite flavor among their creative offerings.

Hillstone Restaurant (formerly “Houston’s”): Unparalleled Service & Exceptional Food
Saving the absolute best for last, Hillstone Restaurant (still affectionately known to many as “Houston’s”) is truly a culinary obsession for us. This establishment consistently delivers an unparalleled dining experience that keeps us coming back again and again. The service at any Hillstone location is simply exceptional; attentive, intuitive, and anticipatory. You’ll often find multiple servers subtly attending to your needs, refilling drinks, replenishing chips, and ensuring every detail of your meal is perfect, often before you even realize you need something. They truly don’t miss a beat.
Beyond the flawless service, the food is consistently outstanding. I find myself craving their dishes constantly. A non-negotiable appetizer is their spinach and artichoke dip – trust me on this one, it’s unlike any other you’ve tried. For entrees, I wholeheartedly recommend their perfectly cooked ribeye steak and the vibrant Thai steak and noodle salad. And please, do not leave without trying their French dip sandwich; it is, without exaggeration, the best I have ever had in my entire life. Every dish is crafted with precision and quality ingredients, ensuring a memorable meal every time. Just do yourself a favor and go!

The Lobby Bar at Ace Hotel (W. 29th Street): A Relaxed Evening Out
While not pictured, The Lobby Bar at the Ace Hotel on West 29th Street is one of our absolute favorite spots for a casual yet sophisticated night out. It’s our go-to recommendation when introducing friends to the city’s local scene. The bar boasts high ceilings, an eclectic mix of music, and plush, oversized couches perfect for lounging and socializing. What truly makes it stand out, especially in New York City, are the surprisingly affordable drink prices.
The atmosphere is consistently laid-back and never feels overwhelmingly crowded, creating an ideal setting for relaxed conversations and good company. You can easily spend hours here, enjoying a drink or two, sinking into the comfortable seating, and simply soaking in the cool, unpretentious vibe. It’s a genuine hidden gem for unwinding after a day of exploring.
