Essential Ingredients for Your Strawberry Fudge Masterpiece

The magic of this Layered Valentine’s Day Strawberry Fudge truly lies in its minimal yet impactful ingredient list. Each component plays a crucial role in creating the perfect texture, flavor, and visual appeal that makes this fudge so irresistible. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need to gather:

  • Buttercream Frosting (16 ounces): This is the secret weapon for achieving that incredibly creamy, smooth, and soft fudge consistency. When melted, it blends beautifully with the candy melts, providing a rich, buttery base that is far simpler than traditional fudge methods involving sugar thermometers and constant stirring.
  • Red Candy Melts (¾ Cup): These vibrant candy melts will form one of the beautiful layers of your fudge, providing a striking contrast and a lovely sweetness. Candy melts are designed to melt smoothly and harden quickly, making them ideal for fudge.
  • Strawberry Flavored Pink Candy Melts (1 Cup): For the quintessential strawberry flavor and another stunning layer, strawberry-flavored pink candy melts are perfect. If you can’t find this specific type, plain pink candy melts will work just as well, especially when paired with the strawberry extract.
  • Strawberry Extract (1 Teaspoon): This potent extract amplifies the natural strawberry flavor, ensuring your fudge tastes wonderfully fruity and authentic. It’s essential for that “strawberry milk” taste that makes this recipe so special.
  • Valentine’s Mix Non-Pareils Sprinkles & White, Pink, Red Heart Sprinkles (Optional): No Valentine’s treat is complete without a generous showering of festive sprinkles! Non-pareils add a delightful crunch and visual texture, while heart-shaped sprinkles beautifully tie into the holiday theme. These are perfect for decorating the top and making each piece extra special.

In addition to these delicious ingredients, you’ll also need an 8×8 square pan and parchment paper to ensure easy removal and clean slices. With these simple items at hand, you’re ready to embark on your fudge-making adventure!

Expert Tips for Perfect Layered Strawberry Fudge Every Time

While this recipe is incredibly straightforward, a few key tips can ensure your Layered Valentine’s Day Strawberry Fudge turns out perfectly every time. Paying attention to these details will help you achieve the ideal texture and flavor, avoiding common fudge-making mishaps.

  • Understanding Fudge Consistency: The balance between chocolate (candy melts) and frosting is crucial. If your fudge ends up too hard, crumbly, or difficult to cut, it indicates you’ve used too much chocolate. For your next batch, reduce the amount of candy melts slightly. Conversely, if your fudge struggles to set or remains too soft, it means you didn’t use enough chocolate. To remedy this, increase the candy melts or slightly decrease the frosting. Don’t worry, even a less-than-perfectly set fudge will still taste delicious!
  • Chocolate Seizing is Normal: When you add the strawberry-infused frosting to the melted candy melts, the chocolate may appear to seize up and thicken. This is a completely normal reaction due to the temperature difference and moisture content. Don’t panic! Simply continue stirring vigorously. The more you stir, the smoother and more pourable the mixture will become. Patience here is key.
  • Caution with Extract: Never add strawberry extract directly to melted chocolate or candy melts. Extracts are typically water-based, and even a tiny amount of water can cause chocolate to seize irrevocably, rendering it unusable. Always mix the extract into the frosting first, then combine the frosting with the melted candy melts. This crucial step prevents spoilage and ensures a smooth, homogeneous fudge mixture.
  • Candy Melt Alternatives: If strawberry-flavored pink candy melts are unavailable, plain pink candy melts are an excellent substitute. The strawberry extract will still provide ample flavor. For those who can’t find candy melts at all, white chocolate chips can be used. However, be mindful of coloring: use only oil-based food coloring. Water-based dyes will, like the extract, cause the white chocolate to seize and become unusable.
  • Achieving the Perfect Layers: When alternating pouring the red and pink mixtures into your parchment-lined pan, do so in random spots. After each pour, gently tap the pan on your counter. This helps to level the fudge, merge the layers slightly for that beautiful marbled effect, and release any trapped air bubbles, ensuring a smooth surface.
  • Proper Chilling is Key: Don’t rush the chilling process. Allow the fudge to chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until it is completely firm. This ensures clean cuts and a stable texture.
  • Storage: Store your fudge in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. If refrigerated, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving to soften slightly.

By keeping these simple yet effective tips in mind, you’re well on your way to creating a beautiful, delicious, and perfectly set Layered Valentine’s Day Strawberry Fudge that everyone will adore!

Total Time 24 mins

Ingredients

  • ● 1 Container/tub Buttercream Frosting (16 ounces)
  • ● ¾ Cup Red Candy Melts
  • ● 1 Cup Strawberry Flavored Pink Candy Melts (or just use pink unflavored)
  • ● 1 Teaspoon Strawberry Extract
  • ● Valentine’s Mix Non-Pareils Sprinkles
  • ● White, Pink, Red Heart Sprinkles (optional)

Items Needed:

  • 8×8 Square Pan
  • Parchment Paper

Instructions

  1. Place the red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and heat on high, in the microwave, for 2-3 minutes or until smooth when stirred. Stop every 15-30 seconds to stir during the melting process to ensure the candy melts don’t overcook.
  2. Follow step one for the pink candy melts, keeping the two colors separated.
  3. Remove the lid and film from the frosting and place it in the microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute, or until fully melted and smooth. Set aside ½ a teaspoon of uncooked frosting if using the heart sprinkles.
  4. Add the extract to the frosting and stir well.
  5. Place half of the frosting in with the red candy melts and the other half with the pink candy melts.
  6. Stir each color vigorously until fully mixed.
  7. Line your 8×8 pan with parchment paper, making sure to leave some overhang.
  8. Alternate pouring in the two colors in random spots, pausing to tap the pan in between so it evens out and removes bubbles.
  9. Once all your chocolate mixtures have been poured in and evened out, sprinkle the top of the fudge with as many Valentine’s themed non-pareils as you like.
  10. Place in the fridge to chill for 2 hours or until hardened.
  11. If desired, use the set aside frosting and place a dab on the back of a heart sprinkle, and press it into the middle of each fudge square you cut for a cute addition! Enjoy!

Notes

Tips:

  • If your fudge turns out a little bit too hard or seems to fall apart or crumble when you’re cutting it, this means too much chocolate was used. You’ll need to reduce the chocolate the next time around. It will still taste yummy!
  • If your fudge won’t set up well, it means you didn’t use enough chocolate. To fix this, increase the chocolate used or decrease the amount of frosting the next time you make it.
  • The chocolate will slightly seize up when the strawberry frosting is added to it. This is totally normal. You just need the mixture to be pourable. The more you stir it, the better it will get.
  • Do not add the strawberry extract directly to the chocolate or it will destroy the chocolate and you’ll have to start over. The extract has a strange effect on chocolate.
  • If you can’t find strawberry candy melts, don’t stress it. The extract still adds plenty of strawberry flavor. You can just use just plain pink candy melts instead.
  • If you can’t find candy melts, you can use white chocolate chips and color the chocolate with oil-based food dye. Do not use water-based dye or it ruins the chocolate, as the extract does.
