Embracing the Golden Hue: A Summer Retrospective and Welcoming Autumn
As the vibrant days of summer gradually give way to the crisp embrace of autumn, a bittersweet feeling settles in. Oh, fall, don’t misunderstand me – I adore every single thing about you! The rich tapestry of colors, the cozy sweaters, the scent of pumpkin spice, and the promise of cooler evenings are truly captivating. Yet, part of me wonders, did you really have to arrive so quickly this year? It feels as though the sun-drenched months, packed with cherished memories and exciting adventures, have simply evaporated in the blink of an eye.
In a unique twist, I felt like I managed to extend my summer experience by relocating to the beautiful city of Miami from March all the way through June. This early immersion into perpetual sunshine meant dodging the lingering chill of winter and getting a head start on warm weather living. Upon our return home in July, the remaining summer weeks seemed to accelerate, vanishing into a whirlwind of activities and joyful moments. However, I truly can’t voice a single complaint, as those bonus months offered an invaluable escape from the cold, making it an exceptionally long summer that, paradoxically, still managed to feel even shorter than usual. It’s a delightful conundrum, a testament to how quickly time flies when you’re truly living and savoring every moment.
Let’s take a collective deep breath and journey back through the highlights of my incredible summer. Prepare to be whisked away on a visual and emotional tour, summarized through a series of photographs that capture the essence of this unforgettable season of my life. And please, try to feign a little interest – these moments mean the world! 😉
During our extended stay in the vibrant heart of Miami, one memorable day led us on a picturesque drive up to Fort Lauderdale. There, we found ourselves mesmerized, watching in awe as the colossal Allure of the Seas gracefully departed from port. It was an absolutely unbelievable experience, a truly breathtaking spectacle of engineering and luxury sailing into the horizon. I distinctly recall feeling a surge of emotion, tears welling up in my eyes. Yes, I definitely cried. They were tears of sheer joy, witnessing such magnificent beauty, combined with a touch of playful sadness that this incredible vessel was “leaving without me.” The sheer scale of the ship, set against the endless expanse of the ocean, truly encapsulated the grandness of our Miami adventure and left an indelible mark on my heart.
This captivating vista was the daily view from our private balcony while we resided at the splendid Hyatt Regency in Coral Gables, a charming and upscale district nestled right outside the bustling energy of Miami. Not too shabby at all, wouldn’t you agree? Waking up to this panorama each morning, watching the city come to life, or enjoying a tranquil evening sunset over the tree-lined streets and historic architecture was an absolute dream. The warm, tropical air and the gentle sway of palm trees became a comforting backdrop to our extended stay. For four months, this luxurious and serene setting served as our home, providing an idyllic escape. There certainly could have been far worse places to spend such a significant portion of the year, and we truly cherished every moment of the vibrant Miami lifestyle.
There’s an undeniable magic to summer days, and for me, any outdoor activity on a picture-perfect day brings immense happiness. One of my absolute favorite pastimes during the warmer months is visiting the charming villages dotted along the canal in Rochester and indulging in the simple joy of feeding the ducks. The peaceful ambiance of the canal, the fresh air, and the anticipation of seeing these feathered friends create a perfect escape. Of course, no duck-feeding excursion is truly complete without the delightful appearance of some precious little baby ducklings. I was almost ready to pack up and leave, thinking I might miss out on this year’s batch, when suddenly, a mama duck and her five tiny, fluffy babies waddled gracefully over, eager to join in on the bread-sharing action. Their synchronized paddling and adorable peeping sounds instantly melted my heart and made my entire day. It was undeniably the cutest thing ever, only perhaps outshone if a few baby swans (my absolute favorite) had also decided to make an appearance!
A truly monumental event this summer was the wedding of my wonderful big brother! It was, without exaggeration, the most perfect, absolutely gorgeous day imaginable. And I’m not just talking about the weather, which was a blissful 84 degrees and sunny, creating an ideal backdrop for an outdoor celebration. Every single detail, from start to finish, radiated love and beauty. The couple chose the utterly unique and picturesque Genesee Country Village and Museum as their venue, which added an incredible charm and historical elegance to the festivities. Guests were treated to charming horse and buggy rides to the quaint village church for the ceremony, setting a wonderfully nostalgic tone. The melodic strains of a bagpipe player added another layer of traditional beauty, echoing across the historic grounds. It was, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever had the privilege of attending. Joe and Missy were surrounded by every single person who loves them, and I can honestly say I have never seen my brother happier or smile wider in his entire life! (Well, perhaps with the sole exception of the day I was born, of course!)
August 6th marked a truly momentous occasion for Rochester, NY, and indeed, in the life of Ashley! The long-awaited day finally arrived: Dairy Queen officially opened its doors. I have been eagerly anticipating this moment since I was a tiny tot, dreaming of the day I wouldn’t have to travel far for my beloved Blizzards. My very first unforgettable trip to Dairy Queen dates back to my childhood, during a family vacation in picturesque Niagara Falls. We quite serendipitously stumbled upon one located just a short stroll from our hotel. It felt like destiny, a sweet encounter I knew was meant to be. Needless to say, my life, and my dessert preferences, were forever changed after that first delicious bite. Ever since, if I find myself within a 50-mile radius of a Dairy Queen during any kind of road trip, I consider it utterly unacceptable not to go out of my way—sometimes even *way* out of my way—to make a pilgrimage to one. This dedication has led to some legendary adventures, like the time I convinced friends to drive an hour out of our way, down dark, winding country roads, late at night, coming back from Pittsburgh. I had an unstoppable craving for an Oreo Blizzard and simply wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. We got a little lost, venturing into some truly remote “middle-of-nowhere” areas of the state, but ultimately, I got my ice cream, and in my world, that’s all that truly matters (a huge shout out to Jenn for her unwavering patience!). I’m often surprised I still have friends after such escapades, but now, with a Dairy Queen right here in Rochester, I have full, daily access to my favorite Blizzard treats, and frankly, all is exceptionally well in my world.
Mr. Spoiled with 2 cakes
Our summer also featured a delightful celebration for Mr. Wishes, my wonderful husband, who marked another year around the sun! His birthday party was a classic cookout held on his parents’ charming deck, and it was made even sweeter by the presence of not one, but *two* magnificent birthday cakes: a refreshing strawberry cake and a rich, indulgent devil’s food cake. It was clear he is one very loved 32-year-old, surrounded by family and friends who cherish him. You can dive deeper into all the heartwarming details of his special day here. And, as if two cakes weren’t enough, I also surprised him with a Dairy Queen Blizzard cake for his birthday (though not pictured, rest assured it was glorious). I know you’re absolutely dying to know what kind it was, right? It was a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard cake, a confection that was basically heaven in cake form. And it truly was a win-win situation because, naturally, I got to enjoy half!
The whole gang!
Speaking of wonderful birthdays, a couple of weekends ago, we had the incredible privilege of celebrating my Grandpa’s milestone 80th birthday! It’s truly remarkable; he doesn’t look a day over 60, and his spirit and energy are boundless. He is, without a doubt, an AWESOME Grandpa, a true patriarch who brings so much joy and wisdom to our family. I was absolutely thrilled to spend the entire weekend with him, marking this significant occasion alongside the rest of my tremendous family. Their lively banter, shared stories, and constant laughter kept me entertained and smiling all weekend long. That’s truly what they do best – creating an atmosphere of warmth, love, and endless mirth. These family gatherings are the fabric of our lives, and celebrating such a wonderful man surrounded by so much love was a highlight of the summer.
Our summer adventures also took us on a pleasant day trip to Syracuse to visit the lovely newlyweds, Joe and Missy, pictured above from their wedding. It was wonderful to catch up with them and see their brand new apartment, brimming with the excitement of their new chapter. One of the planned activities on our itinerary for the day was a peaceful session of kayaking on the serene waters of Beaver Lake. I must say, I believe I have genuinely developed my kayaking skills to a level I honestly didn’t think I’d ever achieve. And by “skills,” I specifically mean that I managed to navigate the entire lake without once flipping my kayak or ending up in the water! For me, that absolutely counts as a wildly successful day in the life of Ashley. The tranquility of the lake, the gentle rhythm of paddling, and the sheer joy of being out on the water with loved ones made for a perfect end-of-summer excursion, capping off a season filled with activity and cherished moments.
And with that, our summer retrospective comes to a beautiful, sun-kissed close. So long, sweet summer! You were filled with extended adventures in Miami, heartwarming family celebrations, delightful culinary discoveries, and personal triumphs on the water. As the leaves begin to turn and a new season beckons, I carry forward these cherished memories, grateful for every moment and ready to embrace the warmth and charm of autumn’s arrival, knowing that these treasured experiences will keep my spirit bright through the cooler days ahead.
