The Magic Behind the Mix: Key Ingredients for Your Cinnamon Roll Dip

The beauty of this easy cinnamon roll dip lies in its simplicity. You’ll only need a few common ingredients to achieve that signature flavor:

  • Cream Cheese: The foundation of our dip, cream cheese provides a rich, tangy, and incredibly smooth base. Ensure it’s at room temperature for easy blending and to prevent lumps.
  • Powdered Sugar (Confectioners’ Sugar): This fine sugar dissolves effortlessly, creating a silky-smooth texture and the perfect level of sweetness without grittiness.
  • Salted Butter: Melted and cooled, butter contributes to the classic richness and depth found in traditional cinnamon rolls. You can use unsalted butter if you prefer, just add a tiny pinch of salt to balance the flavors.
  • Ground Cinnamon: The star spice! A generous tablespoon of high-quality ground cinnamon infuses the dip with its characteristic warmth and aroma.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of vanilla enhances all the other flavors, adding a layer of subtle sweetness and complexity.
  • Whipped Cream (Homemade or Cool Whip): This is where the dip gets its light, fluffy, and decadent texture. You have the option to make homemade whipped cream for an extra rich and airy consistency, or use store-bought Cool Whip for a convenient shortcut. We’ll delve into the differences and how to make homemade whipped cream in the notes below.

FAQs about Cinnamon Roll Dip

  1. How long does Cinnamon Roll Dip last? You can keep the dip for up to 2 days in the fridge in an airtight container. If you used homemade whipped cream, it may separate slightly; gently remix it before serving.
  2. Can I freeze the dip? Due to its dairy content, we do not recommend freezing this dip. The texture can become grainy and separate upon thawing.
  3. Besides dipping, how else can I use this dip? Get creative! Spread some of the dip over cookies to make delightful sandwiches, use it as a frosting for brownies, or even as a unique cupcake topping.
  4. Should I keep the dip refrigerated? Yes, always keep the dip refrigerated until you are ready to serve it to maintain freshness and texture.
  5. What if I’m taking the dip to a party and it will be out for a while? If the dip will be out of the fridge for a prolonged period (e.g., on a serving table), it’s best to use Cool Whip instead of homemade whipped cream, as Cool Whip tends to be more stable. Discard any leftovers that have been at room temperature for more than two hours. If you insist on homemade whipped cream, place the serving bowl in a larger bowl filled with ice to keep it chilled.
  6. Homemade Whipped Cream vs. Cool Whip: What’s the difference? In our opinion, homemade whipped cream creates a fluffier, more decadent dessert with a richer, more natural flavor. However, when life calls for speed and shortcuts, Cool Whip is an excellent and convenient substitute that still yields a delicious dip.

Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pack 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter melted and cooled (you can use unsalted)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cup whipped cream see note
  • Favorite cookies for dipping

Instructions

  • If you are making homemade whipped cream, gather all your ingredients (see note). Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mix with a hand mixer the cream cheese and powdered sugar together. Mix until all combined and smooth. (see note on hand mixer)
  • Add the cooled, melted butter, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract to the cream cheese mixture.
  • Continue to mix until all your ingredients are thoroughly incorporated and the mixture is uniform.
  • Gently add the whipped cream to the mixture and fold it in with a spatula. Using a spatula instead of the hand mixer helps prevent deflating the whipped cream, ensuring a light and airy dip. If using Cool Whip, you can use the hand mixer as it won’t deflate.
  • Pour the finished dip into your favorite serving bowl and place it in the fridge for at least 15 minutes. This chilling time helps the flavors meld together and makes the dip easier to scoop.
  • Serve chilled with your favorite dippers and Enjoy!

Notes

*NOTE* Why use a hand mixer? By using a hand mixer, you incorporate air into the mixture, making it wonderfully nice and fluffy. If you do not have a hand mixer, a stand-up mixer or even a sturdy whisk can work just as well, though it might require a bit more effort.

!BAKER’S NOTES:

  • INGREDIENTS SUBSTITUTION – Homemade Whipped Cream:
    • If you prefer to make your own whipped cream, you will need 1 cup of heavy cream, 2 tablespoons of confectioners’ sugar, and a dash (about 1/8 teaspoon) of salt.
    • In a clean (traces of oil or grease may prevent proper whipping) and preferably cold mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream by itself until soft peaks form. This means when you lift the whisk, the cream will try to form a peak but then gently fall back.
    • At this point, add the confectioners’ sugar and salt.
    • Continue whipping until stiff peaks form. When you take your whisk out of the cream, it should hold its shape, creating a firm peak.
    • Keep the homemade whipped cream cold until you are ready to fold it into the dip mixture.

!*NOTE* Yes, 1 cup of heavy cream typically yields approximately 1 ½ cups of fluffy whipped cream.

  • If you don’t want to use homemade cream, you can substitute it with a 4 oz tub of Cool Whip (or similar thawed whipped topping).
  • CHEF’S TOOLS
    • Mixing Bowls: Anchor and Hockings Glassware
    • Hand Mixer: Oster Heatsoft
