The Unbeatable Simplicity of Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings
There’s a reason why slow cooker meals have become a cherished tradition in homes worldwide, and this Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings recipe perfectly encapsulates their appeal. The beauty lies in its hands-off nature. You simply combine most of the ingredients in your slow cooker in the morning, set it, and forget it. As the hours tick by, the low, steady heat works wonders, transforming raw chicken breasts into incredibly tender, shreddable pieces, while the vegetables soften to perfection and the spices meld into a rich, aromatic broth. This method allows the flavors to deepen and intertwine in a way that quick-cooking just can’t achieve, resulting in a complex and robust taste profile that belies its simple preparation.
For anyone with a busy schedule, from working parents to students, this slow cooker approach is a game-changer. It eliminates the need for constant monitoring, giving you precious time back in your day. Imagine running errands, working, or simply enjoying your afternoon, all while your dinner is gently cooking itself to perfection. By the time evening rolls around, the only remaining step is to add the fluffy dumplings, a final flourish that takes mere minutes. This isn’t just about convenience; it’s about achieving restaurant-quality comfort food with minimal effort, proving that incredible meals don’t have to be complicated.

Key Ingredients for Flavor and Creaminess
The magic of our Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings truly begins with a thoughtful selection of ingredients, each playing a vital role in crafting its signature creamy texture and heartwarming flavor. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are our protein of choice, cooking down beautifully in the slow cooker to become incredibly tender and easy to shred. For that undeniable creaminess and depth, we rely on the classic combination of canned cream of chicken soup and cream of celery soup. These pantry staples not only contribute a rich, velvety consistency but also a foundational layer of savory flavor that binds the dish together.
To further enhance the broth, we incorporate chicken broth and a couple of chicken bouillon cubes, ensuring every spoonful is bursting with robust chicken goodness. The aromatic trio of diced white or yellow onion, celery, and carrots provides essential sweetness, texture, and a wholesome character that defines many comfort food dishes. Minced garlic adds a pungent depth, while ground black pepper and dried thyme are the perfect seasonings, offering a subtle warmth and herbaceous note that complements the chicken beautifully. This harmonious blend of ingredients ensures a symphony of flavors that will have everyone asking for seconds.
And let’s not forget the star of the show: the dumplings! Our recipe cleverly uses refrigerated biscuits, torn into pieces, for an incredibly quick and fluffy dumpling experience. This shortcut is a lifesaver for busy cooks, eliminating the need for making dough from scratch. However, if you prefer, you can certainly make your own dumplings from a Bisquick mix or a homemade dough, offering a slightly different but equally delicious texture. The versatility of this recipe ensures you can tailor it to your preference without compromising on taste or convenience.

Beyond the Bowl: Perfect Pairings and Variations
While a bowl of Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings is a fulfilling meal in itself, it also pairs wonderfully with a few simple sides. A crisp green salad with a light vinaigrette offers a refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the stew, adding a touch of freshness and balance. For those who love to sop up every last drop of the creamy broth, a slice of crusty bread or warm dinner rolls are an absolute must. These additions transform a comforting meal into a complete and satisfying dining experience, perfect for family dinners or entertaining guests on a chilly evening.
Don’t hesitate to get creative with this recipe. It’s incredibly forgiving and adaptable to various tastes and dietary needs. Consider adding a cup of frozen peas or corn during the last hour of cooking for an extra boost of vegetables and color. A pinch of poultry seasoning can further enhance the savory notes, or a dash of paprika can add a subtle smoky warmth. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, a tiny pinch of red pepper flakes could add an interesting kick. If you’re looking for a slightly different texture, you could even try adding some wild rice or small pasta during the last hour to create a thicker, heartier stew.
This recipe is also a fantastic foundation for exploring other comforting slow cooker meals. If you’re craving more “dump and go” delights, you’ll love a Crock Pot Chicken Taco Soup, which is perfect for busy family schedules as it can be kept warm throughout the day. Another highly popular and flavorful option is this Crock Pot Fiesta Chicken & Rice, a long-time favorite for its vibrant Mexican-inspired flavors. And for those nights when Italian sounds just right, you might want to try a Slow Cooker Chicken Parmesan. Each of these recipes offers the same promise of effortless preparation and delicious results, making your slow cooker an invaluable tool for creating memorable family meals.

Ingredients
- 4 Chicken Breasts (boneless, skinless)
- 2 Tablespoons Butter
- 1 Can Cream of Chicken Soup
- 1 Can Cream of Celery Soup
- 3 1/2 Cups Chicken Broth
- 1 cup white or yellow Onion, diced
- 1 Cup Celery, diced
- 1 Cup Carrots, diced
- 2 Chicken bouillon cubes
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 Tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 10 oz. can of refrigerated biscuits*
- * (OR make your own biscuits. You can also make dumplings out of Bisquick dough for this recipe; it works well either way.)
Instructions
Note: I used a 5.5 quart crock pot/slow cooker. Six quarts would also work perfectly.
- Add everything into the crock pot/slow cooker with the exception of the biscuits. Ensure all ingredients are well combined.
- Cook on low for approximately 6 hours. (If you know your crock pot cooks hot or faster than normal, you might want to check it at 5 hours, or if it has an automatic setting, let it switch to ‘warm’ if you’ll be away longer). About an hour (or a little less) before you plan to serve, carefully remove the cooked chicken breasts from the slow cooker. Using two forks, easily pull the chicken into bite-sized pieces or large chunks, then return the shredded chicken to the savory soup mixture.
- Take your raw refrigerated biscuits and tear them into halves or quarters (adjusting based on their original size). Gently place these biscuit pieces on top of the bubbling soup mixture. Replace the lid firmly, allowing the biscuits to cook through and steam for about 45 minutes before serving. This steaming process is key to achieving fluffy, tender dumplings.
- After 45 minutes, the dumplings should have puffed up and expanded significantly from the heat and steam. Before serving, make sure they are thoroughly cooked and not doughy in the center. Serve hot and enjoy this incredibly comforting meal!
